Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner

Cape Scouts to Honor Cape Cod Cares for the Troops

Cape Cod & Islands Council, Boy Scouts of America has selected Cape Cod Cares for the Troops and USMC Col.(ret) "Barney" Barnum as this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Citizens Award.  The awards will be presented at the annual dinner to be held June 21 at the Yarmouth House Restaurant.

The keynote speaker for the program will be USMC Col. (ret) Harvey C. “Barney” Barnum, a Medal of Honor recipient from the Viet Nam war.  Col. Barnum was active in Scouting as a youth.  His Scoutmaster, Irvin Daubert, of West Yarmouth will also be in attendance. He exemplifies Scouting values.

“Cape Cod Cares for the Troops is an outstanding example community service and dedication to Scouting principles”, said Dennis Walczewski, President of the Council.  “What began as a project by a Boy Scout Troop to support a local soldier grew into an organization that has now sent more than 23,000 care packages to our servicemen and women.  And that is because one of those scouts, Dylan De Silva, decided that more needed to be done.”

The program will also recognize the 24 young men who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout this past year. This is the highest award a Scout can earn and requires significant demonstrations of leadership, service to others, and strength of character.
