Project Northstar
An exciting program from Cape Cod & Islands Council, Boy Scouts of America.
for boys age 11-13
This program has been created specifically for Boy Scouts who are 11-13 years old. BSA programs are designed to build leaders through outdoor experience and challenges emphasizing team and individual achievement.
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Program will include one overnight campout each week.
Structure: Participants will be organized into Patrols. There will be a maximum of 24 scouts in the program allowing for 3 patrols of 8 scouts. Each week the Patrol will elect a Patrol Leader. Activities and projects will be done as patrols.
Program: The North Star program content will be based on BSA's outdoor requirements for Tenderfoot through First Class. Additional opportunities will be included such as kayaking, climbing, shooting, cooking, fire building, and pioneering. Parts of the Troop Junior Leadership program will be incorporated. Bringing in "program consultants" such as Natural Resources Officers, will also enhance the program.
The program will be planned so advancement is a natural outcome of the planned activities. Example: if we are going to teach knot tying then there will be an activity planned that will require the use of those knots.
Location: Camp Greenough will be the location for most activities. We will dedicate a designated campsite to this program. The location will be relatively close to the main part of camp, but isolated from the Cub Scout Day Camp. Of course, the nature of the program will require travel throughout the camp to use different facilities.
Staff: The Project North Star will be staffed by experienced adult leaders and senior scouts.
Considerations: Project North Star is not a substitute for going to summer camp with the Troop. A week of Troop summer camp offers many more opportunities and experiences than this program can provide. It is a critical part of any Boy Scout's total experience. We strongly encourage you to have your son attend summer camp with his troop!
