The success of the Boy Scouts of America is due to adults
like you...volunteers, who invest their time, talent and
energy into the many programs of Scouting. From the Council
to the Troop, each adult makes a difference. There are
many reasons for which men and women join scouting.
Usually, it is because their sons are active and they
want to be a part of the fun. Some have a special interest
or talent they wish to share. Others are asked by the
Committee or Scoutmaster to help in a given area. Others
still, wish to accept a leadership position on the
Committee or at the Scout level.
You probably have similar reasons and that is why
you are being encouraged to attend a Teetonkah. So,
let us tell you what Teetonkah is and what you'll learn
when you attend.
Teetonkah is the Cape Cod and Islands Council's name
for the training program for adults. The course will
introduce new (and "seasoned") adults to the programs,
philosophies, objectives, skills and teaching techniques
adults should know to be comfortable, confident and
successful in Scouting. No matter how well intentioned
people are, no one wants to volunteer (or be asked
to volunteer) to do a job they don't understand or
one they feel unqualified to do. That is why there
is Teetonkah.
Two cornerstones of the BSA program are its insistence
on youth leadership and its outdoor program. Both require
adult help to be safe, success- ful and fun. Your Teetonkah
experience will be in two parts: 1) one session called "Scoutmaster/Assistant
Scoutmaster" training; and 2) an out- door camping
experience. Don't feel intimidated by the "SM/ASM" training
title. It just happens to be the name of the course
that has all the in- formation you'll need to be successful
when helping out your Troop.
The staff will be made up of Scouters representing "millions" of
years of experience in all levels of Scouting. Each
will be making presentations that will allow you to
see the reasons behind the philosophies and objectives
of the BSA. The staff's experiences and the question
and answer segments will give you the background you
need to be an effective member of your troop. You'll
find the staff a valuable resource you can use during
the course and in the future.
The skill levels of the boys in scouting are recognized
by the rank the scout has earned. The ranks are from
Tenderfoot to Eagle. Each rank has requirements the
scout must master in order to receive the rank. Your
outdoor camping experience will provide a thorough
understanding of this vital part of the BSA program.
The weekend campout will show you what these skills
are and how to teach them to the boys in your troop.
The staff will give you "hands on" training and point
out any safety concerns the BSA may have in these areas.
Your Teetonkah staff will have plenty of helpful hints
and handouts to take back with you to your troop.
Your Committee and/or Scoutmaster has asked you to
come to a Teetonkah because they know it's the best
way for you to get the information you'll need to be
a successful contributor to their Scouting program.
They also know there is no way they can effectively
and timely teach you and other adults in the troop
all that will be covered at Teetonkah. In addition,
they know conflicts and confusion between Committee
members, parents and Scout leaders can be greatly reduced
by having as many adults as possible knowledgeable
about the BSA program.
As an adult member of this great youth program, your
responsibility is to present the ideals and values
of the BSA to the boys who join. Your troop needs you
and the Cape Cod & Islands Council Teetonkah staff
is ready and waiting to share the program with you.
BE PREPARED ... sign
