 16-hour
weekend certification course at beautiful Camp Greenough.
SOLO is an internationally-known group that offers
courses from 8 hours (first aid)
to 800 hours (wilderness paramedic) from New Hampshire
to Nepal.
Taught with humor, skill, & inventiveness, this class teaches what you need to
know when conventional aid is more than a few hours away. Group sessions are
complemented by frequent trips to the outdoors, where learners taking their turns
as moulage-encrusted "victims" can be found moaning, bruised, broken, & bleeding
all over camp. You'll learn personal preparedness, assessment & care for specific
injuries, improvisation techniques for use of what's in your backpacking gear
(or your victim's, since it's his fault he's hurt ), skills enabling you
to provide longterm care in an outdoor environment, & evacuation techniques.
Learners
should be at least age 16. Plan to camp at BSA Camp Greenough in Yarmouthport
for the weekend & bring your own food, cooking gear, camping gear, etc. Your
backpacking gear can be used (but will not be damaged) in the classes. Scouters
and Scouts will need the usual health form-- Class 3 if age 40+, class 1/2
if 16-39. Note that this is a nonsmoking venue & class.
