Project North Star
for Boy Scouts 11 and 12 years old
An
exciting new program from Cape Cod & Islands Council,
Boy Scouts of America.
Overview: This
program has been created specifically for Boy Scouts
who are 11-12 years old. Scouts will work on outdoor
skills from Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class
as well as selected merit badges and leadership development.
Schedule: Monday
- Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Overnight will take place
on Thursday.
Extended hours are available.
Structure: Participants
will be organized into Patrols.
There will be a maximum of 24 scouts in the program
allowing for 3 patrols of 8 scouts. Each week the
Patrol will elect a Patrol Leader. Activities and
projects will be done as patrols.
Program: The program
content will be based on the outdoor requirements for
Tenderfoot through First Class. Additional opportunities
will be included such as kayaking, climbing, shooting,
cooking, fire building, and pioneering. Parts of the
Troop Junior Leadership program will be incorporated.
Bringing in "program consultants" such as
Natural Resources Officers, will also enhance the program.
The program will be planned
so advancement is a natural outcome of the planned
activities. Example: if we are going to teach knot
tying then there will be an activity planned that will
require the use of those knots.
Location: Camp
Greenough will be the location for most activities.
We will dedicate the Pequot and Keeowa campsites above
Crossroads to this program. This location is relatively
close to the main part of camp, but is still isolated
from the Cub Scout Day Camp. Of course, the nature
of the program will require travel throughout the camp
to use different facilities.
Staff: Patrick
Riley has been selected to be the program director
for the 2008 Camp season. Patrick is an instrumental
music teacher for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School
District. He directs the band program at M. E. Small
elementary school and serves as assistant marching
band director at D-Y High School. He is also an Eagle
Scout.
Considerations: Project
North Star is not a substitute for going to summer
camp with the Troop. A week of summer camp offers many
more opportunities and experiences than we can provide.
It is a critical part of any Boy Scout's total experience.
We strongly encourage you to have your son attend summer
camp with his troop!
